about

Douglas Haig was a senior British Field Marshall during the First World War. He has become known as the 'Butcher Of The Somme'. This was because of his insistence on adopting a war of 'attrition'. The goal was to wear the German army down by force of manpower. This tactic led to great loss of life, for little gain. Nowhere was this more evident than at the Battle Of The Somme. On the first day of the offensive (1st July 1916), the British had an estimated 57,000 casualties (with 20,000 dead).

One of his contemporaries (Lloyd George) commented on the situation 'Haig does not care how many men he loses. He just squanders the lives of these boys' - Niall Ferguson, 'The Pity Of War: 1914 1918' (Penguin, 1998), p. 293.

Originally released on Sweet Solitude (054) in an edition of 10 copies.
